RUB-IWES cooperation

The cooperation is official. With the establishment of a Fraunhofer-IWES branch office under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sourkounis, a new competence center for wind energy is created in Bochum.

In Bochum, a competence center for wind energy will be created with the establishment of a Fraunhofer-IWES branch office HoMAS (German, (Hochintegrierte Mechatronische AntriebsSysteme) under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Constantinos Sourkounis. With the support of the rectorate, in particular Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andreas Ostendorf, the cooperation agreement between the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems (IWES) and the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) has now been concluded.
  © RUB, Kramer
The close cooperation between RUB and IWES opens up new perspectives for research in the field of wind energy with cross-system orientation and competencies. In joint projects, innovations for the future operation of wind energy systems are being advanced. The focus is not only on individual turbines, but also on entire wind farms and their integration into the energy supply grid.
In parallel, the Institute for Power Systems Technology and Power Mechatronics (EneSys) at RUB is also expanding its research competencies at a high level by establishing the Smart Windpark Laboratory. Thus, the Ruhr University is one of the strongest research locations in Germany with an extraordinary number of strategic partners in the field of wind energy. In addition to EneSys, RUB's research activities in this field are complemented by other chairs or institutes of the Faculties of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering as well as the Institute for Mining and Energy Law.

Project InnaMoRuhr started

In a multidisciplinary consortium a concept of integrated, sustainable mobility for the University Alliance Ruhr will be developed and tested it in a field study.

In a multidisciplinary consortium of social sciences, economics and engineering, researchers from the three Ruhr Universities are investigating the question of how mobility in the Ruhr Area can be made sustainable. The project will develop a concept of integrated, sustainable mobility for the University Alliance Ruhr and test it in a field study. The aim is to improve the transport links between the four locations of the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr), Duisburg, Essen, Bochum and Dortmund, to close gaps in the range of services on offer and thus bring about a lasting change in the mobility behaviour of students and employees. The plan is to survey mobility requirements and develop scenarios which will be tested in a simulator and finally tested in real life. For this purpose, locally emission-free technologies, e.g. electric shuttles, but also on-demand services and other forms of new mobility will be used. The project is funded by the Ministry of Transport of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Matching electric cars to the driver

Many people are not quite sure if an electric vehicle would fit into their everyday life. A new smartphone app might help with this issue.

A new app helps drivers decide if switching from a petrol-driven car to an electric car is a viable solution for them – and which vehicle model would be best suited to their individual requirements. It was developed by engineers at Ruhr-Universität Bochum under the auspices of Prof Dr Constantinos Sourkounis. Using the smartphone app, drivers can record their typical routes while, for instance, using their petrol-driven car. Based on the gathered data, the program generates a list of vehicle models that would meet the driver’s requirements, for example cars with sufficient range. Information pertaining to cost saving can also be provided.

New sensor technology for e-vehicle batteries

Batteries for electric vehicles are expensive. This must change if the vehicles are to establish themselves in the market. RUB engineers are currently adjusting one important element.

Engineers at Ruhr-Universität Bochum have developed a new concept for current and voltage sensors for batteries that might become particularly relevant for electric vehicles (EV). An EV battery is made up of individual blocks, each of which contain up to twelve cells. Typically, each cell is monitored by its own voltage sensor. Designed by Philip Dost, the new system requires only one single voltage sensor, thus reducing overall weight and costs. “Just like the cells, the sensors are a considerable weight and cost driver,” as Philip Dost explains the relevance of the new invention. “Some industrial enterprises have already expressed their interest in our innovation.” The system made in Bochum already exists as a lab prototype. Florian Langner realised it in his Master’s thesis at the Institute of Power System Technology and Power Mechatronics.

VDE Award Ceremony

With the increasing share of renewable energies and the amount of converter-fed consumers in the electrical supply grid, power and supply quality are both compromised. Thus in future renewable power generation plants and in particular wind energy conversion systems need to further contribute to grid support and grid stability. Under the supervision of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Constantinos Sourkounis, Ph.D. student Johnny Chhor has made a contribution within his master thesis “Control of Wind Energy Conversion Systems with Doubly-fed Induction Generators during Grid Voltage Dips”. His master thesis has been awarded by the German Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (VDE) with this year’s “VDE award for outstanding graduations” at the fair “E-world energy & water” in Essen, Germany, on 18 February 2016.
